One man is dead following an unusual incident downtown early Saturday morning.
Emergency crews were called to the corner of Water Street and Adelaide Street shortly after 5:00 a.m. following initial reports of a motor vehicle-pedestrian collision.
Upon investigation of the incident it was determined no vehicle was involved, however a critically-injured person lay in the street among debris from a broken street light. Paramedics with Eastern Health took the individual to hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) have confirmed a twenty-six year old male from Mount Pearl as the victim of this incident.
Witness reports from the scene indicate the individual may have been climbing on a traffic light pole when the incident took place. While the RNC have not confirmed the circumstances around the incident they did say the situation is not believed to be suspicious.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
