Meet The Real Characters Who Played Teletubbies

Who isn’t a fan of the “eh Oh ‘ of the four cute Teletubbies?

Even though the Teletubbies episodes came to an end 16 years ago, still the four – red, blue, green and yellow colored, monkey-esque creatures still rule the world of kids who love watching the show on youtube.

It is often said it’s better not to meet the idols as that would take away the curiosity and interest partly, but who doesn’t want to meet their idols, particularly if they happen to be the four adult actors who clambered into the chunky suits to entertain children and their parents alike very often.

Their names are Simon Shelton, John Simmit, Nikky Smedley, and Pui Fan Lee, in the order of the classic theme song.

Earlier the purple coloured Tubby, Tinky Winky was played by Dave Thompson but later he was fired for not playing the character as expected.

So Simon Shelton replaced him on the role of the big purple friendly giant. Shelton was a ballet dancer by profession and was trained in the art.

The 51-year-old played the character of the three-year-old Tinky Winky. He was recorded as saying 51-year-old always ask me if Tinky Winky is gay.

But the character is supposed to be a three-year-old so the question is really quite silly”.

Dipsy’s character was played by John Simmit, was a stand-up comedian and was supposed to play the funky Jamaican toddler in bright green colored Teletubby.

Speaking to iNews, John had said:

“I don’t think anyone knew what a phenomenon Teletubbies would become. You became an attachment to the whirlwind. But as a grounded Jamaican-Brummie, I continued producing theatre shows, DJing and doing stand-up as the show exploded.”

Laalaa the most loved of all the tubbies for having a very warm personality and bubbling with energy. She even owned a huge bouncy ball. No wonder she was the favourite of most kids.
