Some local organizations in the province say they’re shocked by the impacts of proposed amendments to provincial Name Change Legislation. The amendments to Bill-50 were introduced in response to questions raised about sex offenders changing their names. In a release Friday, Quadrangle, the St. John’s Status of Women Council and Trans Support NL say the changes will disproportionately impact the trans and gender diverse community with the additional fees and layers of approval. The groups say the majority of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians seeking name changes are not sex offenders and there are other solutions possible.
