City of St. John’s advises residents of privacy breach – NTV

More than 200 St. John’s residents have been the victims of a privacy breach through one of the city’s online systems. The City of St. John’s announced late this afternoon that 219 residents who use its rec-connect system were affected. Yesterday, a city employee became a victim of a phishing scheme, in which someone posing as a city employee asked for an accounts receivable report via email. the city became aware of the breach to residents on Thursday.
The information breach included name, rec-connect account number and the amount owing. The city advises the information can’t be used to access online accounts and says all residents impacted have been notified by email or phone.
The city is asking residents to be aware of any suspicious emails claiming to be from the city.
